Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Did you know that the following African Americans were from (or lived in) West Virginia?

  • John Henry. He defeated a steam-powered engine with a hammer.
  • Leon Sullivan. He was a minster, social activist, and leader in the Civil Rights movement.
  • Booker T. Washington. He was a prominent spokesperson for African Americans.
  • Carter G. Woodson. He was an African American historian
  • Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. He had won the America’s Got Talent during the 6th season.
  • Georgeann Wells. She is best-known for being the first woman to register a dunk in an official NCAA.
  • Hal Greer. He was a professional basketball player.
Of course there are others, too.
