34. Why does the major portion of the Ohio River flow inside the West Virginia state boundary?

Answer: It was once owned by Virginia

Virginia gave up land northwest of the Ohio River in 1795. The Ohio River remained on the side of Virginia. The river is part of West Virginia today, including Blennerhassett Island, which is in the Ohio River outside of Parkersburg, W.Va.

Ohio River (Hntington, W.Va.) is on the right side.
