West Virginia joined the union as the 35^th state.

 

West Virginia was part of Virginia until June 20, 1863. Virginia was the 10^th state to join the union.

 

Virginia was one of the original 13 colonies. There is one red or white stripe for each of these 13 original colonies.  This original colony included the territory known today as West Virginia.

 

Steve Anderson (2012) is an official U.S. flag collector. Anderson reported that the 35^th star was officially added to the U.S. flag on July 4, 1863.
